Grenada Food

Grenadian Cuisine

What makes grenadian food so unique? Could it be that it is an amalgamation of cuisine from many different cultures? Grenadian cuisine takes it’s influences from African, Indian, Chinese and European communities. The wealth of colonisers from Europe that brought enslaved Africans to the islands and the further influx of indians who came to the islands as endentured workers all fused their food influences to create the Grenadian cuisine as we know it today.

Most people believe Grenadian food to be spicy. Although some cuisine cooked in Grenada is hot, Grenadian cooks use lots of herbs and spices that are blended together to form a marinade for meats, whilst vegetables are steamed or roasted with a minimum of flavourings depending on the dish being prepared.

Combined with the one or more diverse groups of people that have lived here, including the original Carib and Arawak Indians, followed by the Spanish, British, French, and settlers, and of course the Africans, who have had a profound influence on the food and cultural traditions of the island of Grenada. The European occupation of Grenada during the colonial periods, brought food influences from Spain, France and England, including new fruits and vegetables trees and plants, now associated with Grenada. Post colonial Grenadian food influences includes China and India.
